Weaving

In the interest of the reader new to the world of textiles a simple explanation of the commonest terms of weaving at the outset may be helpful. Weaving is done by interlacing two yarns.

The lengthways yarn which is stretched on the loom is called the Warp

This is interlaced by the crosswise yarn called the Weft

Next to the agricultural sector, weaving and the attendant supporting occupations dyeing, pattern-making, and such employ the highest number of people in India.

The weft yarn is prepared and reeled on to Bobbins which are inserted into bamboo shuttles.

This shuttle is then thrown from one end of the weaving width to the other, through the shed which is formed when alternate warp yarns are raised to form a passage, interlacing with the warp to form the weave.

The warp edges formed by the turn-around of the weft yarn in the shuttle from the Selvedge (finished edge).
